Canon announces 200-400 f/4 prototype lens

February 7, 2011 Leave a comment Go to comments

This the lens I’ve been wanting Canon to make since I got into birding, sort of. Unfortunately it’s probably going to run well over $5000 if it’s anything like Nikon’s. What makes this even more interesting is the following:

The new lens will offer exceptional flexibility by incorporating a built-in 1.4x extender that increases the maximum focal length to 560mm for sports and wildlife photography.

Actually this probably is what I want, but it will be out of my price range. This would be an awesome lens to rent once a year for wildlife trips. I’m going to guess that means no version 2 of my 300 f/4 will be forthcoming, which would be a shame.
