Pedernales Falls – May 2

Disappointing, but rewarding. We went in search of buntings and Blue Grosbeak. One Painted Bunting showed up briefly twice and a young Grosbreak showed up, but he was still pretty un-blue. However, the there were two new birds for us: Bell’s Vireo and a Yellow-Billed Cuckoo.  I thought the Cuckoo was pretty exciting.  After brightening the RAW up, the picture turned out ok. It is still frustrating, as most of the interesting birds hide in the back. In the dark. A 400 f/2.8 would be really great :)

A Gray Catbird was present. Another one show wonder was the Golden-Cheeked Warbler. In the back of course. I managed to get one photo, but it’s so embarrassing, I’m not posting it.

The new blind is all walled up now, but the aside from finches and sparrows, there wasn’t much interest in it. Hopefully they will move over there where I can get better photos. No photo holes yet. Also heard they are looking to add a “butterfly garden” between the two blinds. My understanding is that it would be an open, flowery space, not enclosed.

Also saw a tiny snake. Black-chinned Hummingbirds are out in full force. One even came in the blind and had to be escorted back out!

Hi, I just came across your blog and will add it to my blogroll. I notice that you were kind enough to add my Texas Tweeties blog to yours. It appears that your interests are the same as mine, birds and photography. Nice close-up of the Yellow-billed Cuckoo.
