Update 2 of 2 – Pedernales (March 8)
The first spring trip to the blind proved very productive. Bird list:
- Brown-headed Cowbird
- Unknown Warbler (?)
- Unknown Sparrow
- Northern Cardinals
- White-throated Sparrow
- Spotted Towhee (first ever!)
- Western Scrub Jay
- Red-winged Blackbird
- Ladder-backed Woodpecker
- Lesser Goldfinch
- American Goldfinch
- House Finch
- Carolina Chickadee
- Black-crested Titmouse
- Slate-colored Junco
The towhees were by far my favorite. Very pretty bird. The 40D performed quite well, although it’s quite heavy with 300 on. But I now have a monopod, so that should help alot next time. It was overcast, so almost all photos were shot at ISO 400-1600. No hummingbirds yet, though they should start popping up soon. I’m eagerly awaiting the painted buntings.

Very nice images. The monopod will do wonders, though you may also want to consider a tripod if you’re going to be shooting from a blind.
Your sparrow is probably a Lincoln’s Sparrow or a Swamp Sparrow. I’d say it’s 90/10 chance it’s the Lincoln’s.
Got a couple of other questions, but I’ll fire an e-mail to you offline.

Bother… too long of a week. Thought name said subject…
:) Thanks Jim. Sparrows are definitely not my area. I have a tripod but the way the blind is constructed, I don’t think I could use it well.
