Weekend: Aug 2-3

Nothing of real interest this weekend. Hornsby Bend was fairly empty yesterday, although we saw an Eastern Bluebird (female) and I had my first sighting of an American Avocet. The 1.4x teleconverter was helpful in getting decent sizes of birds, but didn’t really help that much in bringing out the detail since they were so far away.

Afterwards we drove out to Bastrop State Park, since it’s less than 30 minutes from Hornsby. This is your typical state park, except the pine trees, which give off a nice scent. There are miles of hiking trails, but it’s way too hot to be doing that. There is a “Wildlife Viewing Blind”. On the map, it’s the binoculars icon on the Scenic Overlook Trail, although you can take other trails to get there. It’s not much to see, built for only a couple of people. It is not dedicated to birds. It overlooks a small, open field of tall grass/flowers. I’m not exactly sure what sort of wildlife one would see…

No really good pictures, but I might put one or two flower photos in my gallery.
